1V1 with Ballin’ 4 Peace: Haron Hargrave
HARON "H2O" HARGRAVE
FOUNDER @ BALLIN' 4 PEACE
Spend just a few minutes with Haron Hargrave, and it’s clear that his passion for people, community growth, spreading peace through sports, and building relationships is infectious. A Queens native, Campus Magnet grad, and former standout guard at Sacramento State University, Haron has dedicated his life to providing support to students, teachers, community leaders, and those in need through his 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Ballin' 4 Peace.
Impactful Community Initiatives by Ballin' 4 Peace
In the last year alone, Haron and Ballin' 4 Peace have made a significant impact through their various initiatives. These include:
- Partnering with the NYPD for a charity softball game
- Hosting the 14th Annual Queensweek Basketball Festival
- Leading the 8th Annual Celebrity Charity Basketball Game
- Organizing the 4th Annual “Celebrating Our Wins” All-Women’s Panel
- Rolling out the first NYC Elite 32 Winter Classic for middle school, junior varsity, and varsity basketball teams at Springfield Gardens High School.
Going Beyond Ballin' 4 Peace: Shaping Future Leaders
When Haron is not pouring his heart into his nonprofit work, he is shaping the next generation by working as a substitute teacher for the New York City Department of Education, officiating basketball games across New York City, and making regular appearances on TV stations, podcasts, and conducting interviews.
A Personal Journey: The Influence of Family
Haron’s drive is fueled by his deep connection to his family. He credits his mother, Rhonda T. Hargrave, for inspiring his work. Rhonda, a school teacher for over 25 years at Springfield Gardens High School, taught Haron the values of education, community, and giving back. Her influence continues to guide him every day.
“My mother had a huge impact on me and the things that I love to do,” Haron shares. “She’s with me every day, guiding me in my purpose.”
Haron also draws strength from his father, Harold Hargrave, who remains an enduring source of motivation. At 80 years old, Harold’s dedication to fitness and action inspires Haron to stay driven and conditioned in both life and work.
“He’s a man of action, not big on words, but he always lets me know that I’m doing a great job,” Haron says.
Lessons Learned from the Nonprofit Sector
Before founding Ballin' 4 Peace in 2012, Haron wished he had known more about fundraising and sponsorship outreach. While he continues to face challenges in nonprofit leadership, Haron remains committed to pushing forward and making the biggest impact possible. “It’s about working with the right people,” Haron explains, “The right person and the right ‘yes’ can change everything.”
Expanding the Reach of Peace Through Sports
The mission of spreading peace through sports goes beyond New York City. Haron believes the opportunities to give back are endless, from collaborating with other organizations to boots-on-the-ground efforts across the city. Whether it’s creating more events or engaging with more communities, Haron’s work continues to spread the message of peace and unity.
The 8th Annual Celebrity Charity Basketball Game: A Milestone Event
The 8th Annual Celebrity Charity Basketball Game at John Jay College was a major success. Not only did the event set new fundraising records, but it also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Ballin' 4 Peace and the NYPD to bridge the gap between cops and communities. Haron reflects, “Sometimes you wonder, is it still worth it? This year showed me that the answer is, yes. People care about Ballin’ 4 Peace.”
Looking Ahead: What's Next for Ballin' 4 Peace
As 2024 draws to a close, Haron is focused on continuing to bring people together to spread peace through sports. Ballin' 4 Peace will host the second annual NYC Elite 32 Winter Classic at Springfield Gardens on December 27th and 28th, uniting student athletes and their families during the holidays.
“The NYC Elite 32 Winter Classic is more than just a basketball event,” Haron says. “It’s about creating opportunities for young athletes, giving scholarships, and making a difference in their lives. It’s even more special that it’s taking place in the same place my mom taught for over 25 years.”
